ATP 6-22.1 — The Counseling Process
Army Techniques Publication 6-22.1 defines the counseling process — the types, stages, approaches, and techniques that make counseling an effective leadership tool rather than a paperwork exercise.
Current edition: 1 July 2014
Questions are based on this version. If your copy shows a newer date, let us know — we'll update the question bank.
Three types of developmental counseling (event, performance, professional growth), four stages of the counseling process (open the session, discuss the issue, develop a plan, close the session), three counseling approaches (directive, nondirective, combined), active listening techniques, nonverbal indicators, DA Form 4856, and overcoming resistance to counseling.
Counseling is tested at every board because it is the NCO's primary tool for developing soldiers. Boards ask about the four stages of counseling and the three approaches. Knowing when to use directive vs. nondirective — and why — demonstrates the leadership maturity boards are looking for in NCOs.
