Army Doctrine Publication 4-0 defines the sustainment warfighting function — how Army forces provide the logistics, personnel services, and health service support that enable commanders to maintain operational reach and extend the duration of operations.

Three major elements (logistics, personnel services, health service support), eight principles of sustainment (integration/anticipation/responsiveness/simplicity/economy/survivability/continuity/improvisation), five personnel services principles, six Army Health System principles, theater sustainment organizations (TSC/ESC/TEC), operational reach, endurance, force projection, theater opening/closing, and joint sustainment.
Sustainment is tested at boards because every NCO is responsible for the readiness of their Soldiers and equipment. Boards ask about the eight principles of sustainment and what operational reach means in practice. Knowing that sustainment enables the commander to extend operations — not just "keep the trucks running" — shows doctrinal depth.
